Description

Dr. Omer is an associate professor at the Institute of Sustainable Energy Technology, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Nottingham, in the United Kingdom. Dr Omer has over 28 years of teaching and research experiences in sustainable and renewable energy technologies, sustainable building technologies, building integrated renewable energy systems, refrigeration/cooling devices including ejector cooling, absorption and desiccant cooling system and thermoelectric devices, phase change materials and energy efficient systems. Dr Omer has carried out a number of research projects funded by the European Union (EU), Engineering, Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) in UK, Department of Trading and Industry (DTI) in UK, the industry and the Greenpeace Environmental Trust related to the proposed project. He has published over 80 papers in refereed journals and conferences contributions. Dr Omer was the first to be involved in the design, installation and monitoring of renewable energy facilities at the Angela Marmont Renewable Energy Centre, the Eco-energy house and the Nottingham University Jubilee campus which have drawn considerable attention towards the department role in the field of renewable and sustainable energy technologies nationally and internationally.

Expertise Summary
My expertise is in sustainable and renewable energy technologies, sustainable building technologies, building integrated renewable energy systems, refrigeration/cooling devices including ejector cooling, absorption and desiccant cooling system and thermoelectric devices, phase change materials and energy efficient systems.

Teaching Summary
Dr Omer is the director of one of the most successful master courses in the department "MSc course in Sustainable Building Technology", which is receiving a wide international interest. He has contributed to University teaching strategy by establishing a number of memorandums of understanding (MOU) between the University of Nottingham and a number of Sudanese and Chinese universities, and through these he has facilitated annual scholarships from the Physical and the Environmental Centre of Khartoum to about 15 master students and 3 PhD students to a number of departments in the university including, engineering, medical and computer science.

Current teaching modules include:
1. Renewable Energy Technologies (Resources assessment, System design/sizing and assessment)
2. Energy Conversion Systems
3. Fuel cells and Hydrogen technologies

Current Research

  • Design and modeling of compressed air energy storage for large-scale renewable energy integration into grid
  • Innovation cooling and self cleaning technologies for PV systems
  • Solar operated desiccant cooling systems for hot and humid climates
  • Micro encapsulated phase change materials (MEPCM) panels for domestic building applications

Past Research

  • Investigation into application of thermoelectric refrigeration for desktop fridges
  • Investigation into application and performance analysis of solar operated ejector refrigeration for building cooling - a case for Mediterranean climate
  • Siting and performance assessment of micro wind turbines in the built Environment, focusing on the effect of turbine turbulence on the performance of building mounted wind turbines and yaw analysis of micro-scale horizontal axis wind turbines and noise investigation
  • Wind Energy in the Built environment, design analysis using CFD and wind tunnel modeling
  • A novel clear foil cushion construction incorporating water layer for building cooling
  • Wind Catcher assisted Indirect evaporative cooling system for building application

Future Research

  • Mapping of UK building stock for Building Integrated PV system
  • PV self cleaning and cooling technologies for hot and arid climates
  • Energy storage systems for large renewable energy integration into grid system
  • Sustainable Mosque Buildings
